A wood engraving of my frog güiro, found in a charity shop. Güiro are hollow percussion instruments. The frog makes a rasping noise when a stick is moved along the ridges on its back.

Printed by hand using a cool, dense black ink with a hint of deep blue.

Mounted on 5×7inch card. Print size approximately 1.5inch x 1.5inch.

About my wood engraving prints:

To create the engraving, sharp tools are used to carve small marks into the surface of wooden blocks. The blocks are made from hardwoods, such as maple, boxwood, or pear. The image is carved into the end grain of the wood, allowing for fine detail.

To make the prints, a viscous linseed oil ink is warmed, then rolled in a very thin layer across the block. Translucent but strong kozo paper (made from the long fibres of the kozo plant, or paper mulberry tree) is laid on top of the block, and gently burnished until the image is printed. Once dry, the kozo paper is cut to size and stabilised by being mounted on heavyweight card.
